Longtime Florida Horseman Milton S. Hendry Dies at 82


Longtime Florida horseman Milton S. Hendry, 82, died June 27 in Crystal River, Fla.

The native of Bay Springs, Miss., beloved horses all of his life and first turned professionally concerned with present horses, reining horses, and barrel racing. He later rode at unsanctioned meets within the South and Midwest earlier than receiving his jockey license to journey Quarter Horses in Louisiana in 1972.  Earlier than retiring from using in 1986, he was a number one Quarter Horse jockey at Commonwealth Race Course in Louisville, Ky., and Pompano Park in Pompano Seaside, Fla.

Hendry began coaching for Alec and Louise Courtelis’ City and Nation Farms in McIntosh, Fla. In November 1988 he began working for Fred W. Hooper, the place in his 12 years of service he broke and skilled high Thoroughbreds, together with Diplomatic Jet and Roman Envoy.

After a short stint for John Franks at his Franks Farm in Ocala, Fla., Hendry labored at Arthur Appleton’s Bridlewood Farm, the place he broke and briefly skilled 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Smarty Jones .

Hendry and his spouse of 37 years, Beth, owned Westfield Farm in Ocala from 2000 by means of 2008, the place they bred their mares and offered the foals as yearlings and 2-year-olds in coaching.  The couple bred and offered Do not Get Mad, who completed fourth within the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1) and gained the Indiana Derby (G2) in 2005.

Hendry retired from Bridlewood Farm in 2012 to assist his son, Lane, begin Hendry Coaching.

He loved touring america in his motor house visiting his favourite places—Yellowstone Nationwide Park, Niagara Falls, and Redwood Nationwide and State Parks in California. He beloved spending time together with his household and tremendously loved being part of his grandchildren’s actions.

Apart from his spouse, Hendry is survived by his kids Katrina (Craig) Patterson, Lynn Hendry, Lane (Shantel) Hendry, Casey (Ashley) Hendry, and Byron (Jennifer) Saucer; and grandchildren Ben Myers, Madi Garcia, Cassidy Stone, Tucker Hendry, Grant Saucer, Easton Hendry, Harper Saucer, Atleigh Hendry, Man Hendry, and Magnolia Hendry.

A celebration of life service will probably be held at Gulf to Lake Church in Crystal River at 11 a.m. July 26. Contributions in reminiscence of Milton could be made to Gulf to Lake Church, 1454 North Gulf Avenue, Crystal River, FL 34429.
